What is Viscosupplementation?

Viscosupplementation refers to the line of products used to treat arthritis in the knee joint. “Visco” is short for viscosity, and “supplementation” means we are adding a viscous gel to your joint as a supplement to the volume of fluid currently in your joint. These injections are guided under X-rays to increase the effectiveness and properly reach the joint.

As you develop more wear and tear in your joint from osteoarthritis, the cartilage begins to erode as the rubber wears away on a car tire. As the number of cartilage cells and/or overall amount of cartilage decreases, the volume of natural hyaluronic acid reduces in turn. This creates a deficiency in the amount of lubricating fluid (synovial fluid) that protects the joint.

The “gel” or viscosupplement is a natural compound made by the joint’s cartilage cells, and it acts as a lubricating and cushioning gel to prevent rubbing and grinding in the joint that occurs because of osteoarthritis.
